Being a mom is tough so anything that can help make life a little bit easier has to be welcomed, right?
Unfortunately, properly maintaining your home is one of “those” things.
Home maintenance may not be fun, but it can make life so much easier in the long run, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time. One of the worst parts of being an adult has to be those dreaded unexpected bills, but taking the time now to maintain your home a little, can mean less chance of a jaw-dropping repair bill further down the line.
While moms have many superhuman powers (such as the ability to survive on zero hours sleep and making it through a trip to the supermarket with a screaming threenager being just a couple) there is, unfortunately, one thing that moms have no control over: the weather.
When it feels like it, the weather can create a massive number of problems for homes, and most of them can result in pretty significant repair work. Get yourself prepared for Mother Nature to do her worst with these home maintenance jobs that will have you ready for the elements.
#1: Give Your Guttering Some Attention
Checking your guttering and rainwater drainage system may not feature in your top ten most exciting ways to spend your time, but you will be glad that you did it (promise).
While your guttering may look pretty unassuming, the job that it performs is actually really important. During heavy rain and winds, your guttering can get clogged up with all kinds of debris and leaves.
To keep it functioning as it should, you will need to get your gutter cleaned to clear away all this debris. A blocked gutter means rainwater has nowhere to go other than cascading down the side of your home. The result of this unplanned deluge? You could end up with damage caused to your exterior walls, and inside you may get nasties forming and taking hold such as mold, damp and rot - yuck!
#2: Protect Your Roof
Your roof is your main barrier against the elements (duh), so look out for any loose tiles after a storm, as you will need to get them dealt with straight away. Loose tiles are not only bad for anyone who may be walking along where they fall, but also leave your home exposed to the weather.
On the subject of roofs, if you have solar panels, don’t forget to look into ways of preventing solar panel hail damage. Damage caused to your solar panels could land you with a big repair bill, which could have been avoided.
#3: Don’t Forget Your HVAC
Ahhhhhh...HVAC, where would you be without it?
(If you’re like me and are reaching for the Googles, HVAC stands for “Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. You’re welcome.)
Your HVAC is definitely something that you don’t appreciate until it stops working, and then boy, do you miss it. Make sure that you show your HVAC some attention by getting it properly serviced on a regular basis, to lessen the chances of it needing a costly and disruptive repair.
