Cottage cheese has a bit of a bad reputation. It doesn’t look particularly appetizing with its lumpy texture, and some people don’t like the taste. But it’s a real shame that so many people hate cottage cheese because it’s a healthy food that can be delicious when you prepare it in the right way. It’s high in protein, packed with calcium, and has lots of probiotics to improve your gut health. Often, it can be used as a much healthier alternative to other types of cheese and there are some incredible dishes you can cook with it. If you aren’t a fan of cottage cheese, try some of these ideas and you might just change your mind.
Lasagna is one of the ultimate comfort foods there is but it’s not ideal if you are trying to count your calories. The cheese sauce is one of the unhealthiest elements as it's packed full of fat, but don’t worry because you can still enjoy your favorite lasagna guilt-free if you swap it out for some cottage cheese instead. You still get the same great layers and the indulgent, creamy texture that you’re looking for, but it’s much lower in calories. It’s a lot lighter too, so you won’t be stuck to the sofa after eating it.
Taco casserole is a delicious dish that combines the cheesy goodness and satisfying crunch of tacos with the hearty, warming quality of a casserole. But again, the cheese adds a lot of calories and if you are on the keto diet, there are way too many carbs. You can still enjoy this great dish if you use this keto taco casserole recipe that uses cottage cheese instead. It’s just as tasty but way better for you, and it’s so easy to make. It’s also a very adaptable recipe so you can experiment with different flavors.
Cottage Cheese Pancakes
Pancakes are a great breakfast treat and we all enjoy a big stack on pancake day, but they don’t have much in the way of nutritional value. If you want pancakes that are packed full of protein, you can make them with cottage cheese and cream cheese in them. These are perfect as a snack after a tough workout or just as a unique alternative to normal pancakes. They are also good if you want your kids to eat more healthy food because they’ll love pancakes and they won’t even be able to tell that you’re sneaking healthy ingredients in there.
Homemade pesto is so much tastier than the shop-bought stuff, and cottage cheese is a great addition. There’s no need to swap out any other ingredients, just add a few spoons of cottage cheese for a lighter, creamier pesto. It also packs in more protein and calcium and bulks out the pesto so there are fewer calories in each bite.
Most people that hate cottage cheese have had one or two bad experiences with it when it wasn’t used in a very inventive way. But if you try it in these great recipes, you can make healthier food with much higher nutritional value, and it’s still delicious. So, why not give cottage cheese another try?
