Everyone knows that the cost of living has risen in recent months, and for many people, adjusting their day-to-day standard of living has been a necessary reaction to that. However, it’s also important to remember that there may be some steps you can take before you make a drastic change. For example, you might not need to sell your car just yet, when instead you could opt for off-brand generic medications which hold the same ingredients as the brand names, or decide to take one less vacation this year.
You may also consider small pick-me-ups, such as selling old possessions you no longer need. Perhaps you want to sell your television before picking up a new model, or you think it’s time to get rid of those cluttered antiques you have no further use for. If you do decide to sell your home possessions, it’s good to know how to get the most value from them, so you can stretch your money further.
In this post, we’ll help you achieve exactly that.
Understand What You’re Selling
It’s important to note the real value of what you’re selling is, because the last thing you want is to undersell a valuable item. You can often see just what people are willing to pay for a particular item on auction sites like eBay, where certain auctions can be hotly contested if the item is rare enough. You can also ensure you get a professional appraisal if the item is valuable enough.
It’s also important to consider the condition and selling circumstances of the item because this can influence its value too. For example, selling a Rolex without paperwork is more than possible, but a lack of official documentation may bring the price down a little. If you have an item in mint condition, never opened out of the box, a limited run, or perhaps even an item that may be hard to come by, you can raise your prices accordingly. This way, you might also use reserves or nearest offer features on websites like eBay. If the item has little value, you might not even sell it, but donate it to somewhere that may find value in it, such as a local charity shop service.
Select The Right Platform
It’s good to determine which platform is best to sell with. If you’re selling a high-priced item, then it’s probably good to stay away from places like Facebook Marketplace and stick to services that allow for seller protections, like eBay.
In some cases, the platform itself might cater to your given niche. For example, many people use apps like Depop to sell old clothes, sometimes vintage, because the thrifting community on apps like that can determine the value of your item much more accurately than a general marketplace like Facebook may be able to.
Of course, certain platforms may help you showcase your item more easily, like Autotrader which is used for second-hand vehicles. Consider the fees, listing possibilities, and the kind of audience you’re likely to attract. It will help you make an easier, potentially more valuable sale.
Consider Collectors
In some cases, your old possessions might work better when speaking to collectors who care about what you have to offer. Speaking to an antique specialist, for instance, might help you find someone who is actually interested and can appreciate the value of what you have to offer. This can be important when selling off items that have meaning to you, like possessions that may have been handed down through your family.
In some cases, collectors might purchase items that others wouldn’t. For example, selling first-edition prints of books to specialist book shops might secure you a much higher price than you would have seen otherwise.
Consider Bundles & Conveniences
For ease of sale, sometimes it’s good to bundle like items together or to make sure you sell them as one job lot. For instance, it might be that your child has flown the nest and now you have their old game consoles they’re happy for you to sell.
You could sell the controllers, the connection leads, the console itself, and video games separately, but of course, you might sell them all as one if you bind like items together and then add just a small discount to make it appealing. Selling as a set not only inspires people to look at the unique collection but gives you the chance to sell multiple items at once. The convenience of selling is sometimes worth its own form of recompense, and so the small discount is worth it in the end.
With this advice, you’re sure to sell your old possessions in the best possible way.
