Your home is your castle and if you are going to be the king or queen of that castle, you need to know how to look after the space so that it stays secure for you and your family. No one wants their security to feel violated, and as a homeowner you have a responsibility to ensure that your home is cared for.
Home invasions are some of the least and yet most violent things to happen to people. When someone invades your home, they are invading your privacy, your security and your vulnerabilities. They are taking something from you beyond the physical and you can end up feeling violated. While you can call A-1 Locksmith to replace the locks - and you should - you have to do so much more than that to keep your home completely secure. With this in mind, we’ve got some tips for you to keep your home safe for you and your family.
Light It Up
Your home and your gardens need to be well-lit to deter people from choosing your house to break into over others. Lights deter criminals because they don't want to be seen. Lights on sensors are those that will pop on in response to movement in your garden and home. Good lighting won’t always guarantee security, but it’s a good place to start!
Add Extra Locks
We talked about replacing the locks with a locksmith, but you should consider installing extra locks, too. Deadbolts are a great option to add to the back fence gates, the garage and the front and back doors. You have to consider how extra locks are going to make your home feel more secure - and they will!
Consider Adding Security Screens
You may have a screen door on your front porch already, but when was the last time you considered security screens made of steel? These can be a great help for doors and windows on a ground floor level as they make a physical barrier for thieves to be put off of your home.
Install a Camera System
Do you have a security system in your home already? If you don't, you should consider it! Security cameras are a great deterrent but only if you make it obvious that you have them around the home. Not only do they work to put people off, they really work to catch the faces and shapes of any intruders on your property.
Use Common Sense
Make sure that you don't hide a key in the front yard. You see it in the movies and there are even decorative rocks that you can buy to hide a key inside. Hiding a spare key is a bad idea and there are so many places that are far too obvious around your home that thieves would check on. So, instead of hiding a spare key in your front yard, you need to think about installing a key safe instead.
Having the house you live in broken into is terrifying and it takes time to get over something like that happening. Use the tips above and ensure your safety.
