We come to see our homes as our sanctuaries, places that offer us comfort and security where we can relax and feel at peace. However, it is always a little unsettling to know that there can be unseen dangers lurking. This post aims to get to grips with the unknown threats to which you could be vulnerable, and how to keep them at bay to ensure that your home remains that sanctuary.
Danger #1: Mold
Often hidden away under carpets or within walls, mold can cause a significant range of health issues. Allergic reactions and respiratory issues can be among the main dangers of mold, and without treatment, it can cause a significant detriment to the well-being of your loved ones. Keep an eye out for the tell-tale dark patches on walls and floors, and take immediate action to drive it out.
Danger #2: Domestic Pests
When people think of home intruders, they tend to picture other people, but the biggest threat you should really be concerned about is another kind of visitor entirely. Rodents and insects can take hold in a home quite without warning, and the environment doesn’t need to be dirty or messy for them to bed in. Signs of infestation include bite marks, droppings, unusual sounds, and torn food packaging. If you suspect you have unwelcome visitors, companies like Brentwood Pest Control can be a vital resource to help you win the battle. Be careful when laying your own traps for critters, as some can be dangerous to small hands.
Danger #3: Airborne Threats
Some of the more persistent problems in a home are the ones you can’t see; or at least, they’re more difficult to pick up as they are in the form of tiny airborne particles like dust mites, pollen, and pet dander. It is more than possible for you or one of your family to be allergic to such particles without really knowing, but if you’re often itchy or short of breath, you may be reacting to airborne troubles. Regular cleaning will keep the worst away, but in between times, it is a good idea to use air purifiers and keep the home well-ventilated to prevent a build-up.
Danger 4: Household Chemicals and Toxins
There is no shortage of household products that are largely essential in everyday use, from cleaning agents to cosmetic products, which can be harmful if inhaled, touched, or ingested. Items like bleach or nail polish remover can cause accidental poisoning to children or animals and should be kept away from easy reach. When using them yourself, make sure to always follow the instructions, as residue left in the wrong place can be hazardous. There are also likely to be non-hazardous alternatives that can be bought for additional peace of mind and to avoid harm to the environment.
Keeping an eye on the potential hazards that can be lurking within your home is simply a smart thing to do. Always view your home and its storage spaces with a critical eye and consider whether there is more that can be done to prevent risks to health.
